Driving to Ukraine from Italy is possible: about 1,500 km from Milan to the Medyka–Shehyni crossing via Austria and Poland, 16–18 hours of driving plus the border wait, from 2 to 8 hours. You need a passport, the vehicle registration document, an Italian driving licence, a Green Card valid for Ukraine (or border insurance) and the health policy for the driver and passengers.
What is the best route from Italy?
From Milan or Venice: Tarvisio, Villach, Vienna, Brno, Katowice, Kraków, Rzeszów, then the chosen crossing. Toll motorways in Austria (vignette), Slovakia or the Czech Republic (electronic vignette) and partly in Poland. From Rome and the South add 600–700 km. Many stop overnight in Kraków or Rzeszów and cross the border early in the morning, when the queues are shortest.
Which crossings can you use by car?
| Crossing (Poland → Ukraine) | Towards | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Medyka → Shehyni | Lviv (80 km) | The busiest, open 24 h, long queues at weekends |
| Korczowa → Krakovets | Lviv (70 km), motorway | Motorway crossing, often faster than Medyka |
| Hrebenne → Rava-Ruska | Lviv (60 km) | Good alternative, medium queues |
| Dorohusk → Yahodyn | Kovel, Kyiv | Convenient from Warsaw, many trucks |
| Zosin → Ustyluh | Volyn | Small, cars only, short queues |
Real-time waiting times are published by the Ukrainian Border Guard Service (dpsu.gov.ua) and Polish customs; in summer and around holidays 5–8 hours are common.
Which documents do you need for the car?
- Passport for everyone on board.
- Vehicle registration document in the driver's name. If the car belongs to someone else or is leased, you need a notarised authorisation or the leasing company's permission, translated.
- Italian driving licence: recognised; an international permit is not mandatory but avoids discussions at checks.
- Green Card with the UA code not crossed out. Beware: since 2022 many Italian insurers have excluded Ukraine from the Green Card. If yours does not cover UA, Ukrainian border third-party insurance is sold at the crossing, valid from 15 days to one year, from a few tens of euros.
- Health policy for Ukraine for driver and passengers: it is a separate document from the car insurance and is checked at the border just as for train travellers.
What happens at customs with the car?
A foreign-registered vehicle enters under temporary import for personal use, duty-free, and must be re-exported by the deadline the customs officer writes on the document you receive at the crossing: keep it. You cannot sell or lend the car in Ukraine. Cash over €10,000 must be declared; fuel in the tank and one jerrycan are allowed; drones, body armour and radios need permits. Humanitarian aid carried by car passes with the Ukrainian recipient's documents.
How do you drive in Ukraine?
- Limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 outside, 110–130 on motorways. Speed cameras and patrols are frequent on main roads.
- Blood alcohol limit: practically zero (0.2‰). Penalties are heavy.
- Dipped headlights on during the day outside towns from October to May.
- Military checkpoints on the roads: slow down, turn the music off, keep passport and registration ready. No photos.
- Curfew: no driving at night without a permit. Plan your stages to arrive earlier.
- Fuel is available everywhere and paid by card; the main chains (OKKO, WOG) also have coffee and clean toilets.
Is it better to drive or take the train?
Driving makes sense if you carry aid or equipment, travel as a family with a lot of luggage, or need to move between several cities. For one person heading to Lviv or Kyiv, the train from Przemyśl is cheaper, faster overall and has no border queues. In both cases the health policy is the same: bought online before departure and valid for the whole stay.
